Khaliya Top Trek, Munsyari Uttarakhand

 Khaliya Top Trek

Khaliya Top is a snow-covered  meadow nestled in the Kumaon Himalayas, approximately 12 km from Munsiyari in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district. Known for its pristine beauty, the trek to Khaliya Top offers an offbeat experience for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts alike. The journey can be completed in a day, but it's best to plan for a relaxed weekend break to fully immerse yourself in the experience.

I can take around 3 to 4 hours to trek to the zero point and a bit less than this to come down from the top.

Trekking to Khaliya Top

The trek begins at Balati Bend, which is about 6 km from the summit. While classified as an easy to moderate trek, there are some steep ascents along the route.

This path takes you through dense forests where you can spot exotic wildlife, and the surrounding panoramic views are absolutely breathtaking, but it is advisable to go with the guide specially at the times of winter beacuse when you reach the top, that is from where Bugyal start, there are high chances to deviate from your path to the zero point. There are various points.

The highlight of this trek is the stunning vistas of the Himalayan peaks, including Panchachuli, Nandadevi, Hardeol, Nandakot, and Rajrambha.

For those who seek a magical experience, reaching the summit during sunset or sunrise provides a captivating display of nature’s beauty. The sun’s golden hues painting the snow-capped peaks create a memory you’ll cherish forever. If you have time, you can extend your trek by 1 km to Zero Point for a 360-degree view of the majestic surroundings.

Winter and Summer Activities at Khaliya Top

During winter (late December to February), the adjacent Khaliya Bugyal offers skiing opportunities. You can rent ski equipment and receive training here, making it a fantastic winter getaway. In the summer months, paragliding is available, allowing adventurers to soar over the scenic landscape.

Important Tips for Trekkers

While beginners can attempt the Khaliya Top trek, physical fitness is essential. It's advisable to trek with an experienced guide, especially in winter when snowy terrain can make the hike more challenging. Be sure to carry proper winter clothing, even in summer, as the weather can be unpredictable.

Accommodation is available at the KMVN guest house near the summit, offering a cozy place to rest. You can book your stay at KMVN Munsiyari through its website.

Whether you’re looking for an adventurous trek or a peaceful escape into nature, Khaliya Top is a must-visit destination. Its serene atmosphere, panoramic views, and thrilling activities make it a perfect retreat for mountain lovers.

My Journey to Khaliya Top Trek-

We started our journey to Khaliya top Trek from the District Chamoli by road with our own vehicle. We passed through various cities such as Garur, Baijnath, Bageshwar, Kapkot, Tejam, Dafa and Birthi.

We started at around 10o'clock from Tharali, district- Chamoli and reached Birhti at around 11o'clock night. In between, we stopped for lunch and tea on the way. We stayed at the KMVM, Birthi. The facilities at KMVM, Birthi were great. We had dinner there and the menu at the KMVM was lesser, compared to normal restraunts as it is in the interior of Himalayas.

The views at the KMVM in the morning were very beutiful and we also got our tea and breakfast on time. We visited the Birthi falls which were stunning, a small stream runs from the waterfall which supplies the whole village with water. Then we got ready and left for the Khaliya top trek starting point, which was not too far just 20 k.m. away. It took us an hour to get there.

We started our trek by taking the tickets from the starting point of the Khaliya top trek. We bought some sticks as to help us in treking. We began our treking through the dense Khaliya top forest, which was full of natural beauty. At the halfway point of our tek, we stopped for a tea break and also ate some maggi. After waiting for half an hour, we resumed our journey.

After covering some distance, the terrain turned to Bugyal(grasslands) with the green grass and colorful flowers streching miles across the grassland. We saw many sheep grazing on the mountain grass. Then, we came across a lot of rhodhodendron trees which were horizontal for some unknown reason. They were blooming with lots of light-pinkish rhodhodendron flowers.

The horizontal Rhodhodendron trees

Then we finally reached the so-called zero-point, which was our final destination and the last stop of the Khaliya top trek. We had trekked for 6 k.m. incline to reach this point. Near it, was a warning sign on which was written that you should not go after this  as the forest department doesnt allow anyone after that point.

The caution sign after the zero point

Then we started our return journey towards the staring point of Khaliya top trek. It took around three hours to reach the starting point which was considerably less than the time it took us to go up as we were coming down. We reached the starting point and soon started for our stay at the KMVM Birthi. We had dinner there itself.
